Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of tourism activities on the quality of natural resources in the Hatun Yanawpi private forest. A variety of tourism-related practices were identified in the area, including hiking, cultural tourism, expeditions, biological research, social development initiatives, and camping. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Chocó tapaculo (Scytalopus chocoensis) and the Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) are considered vulnerable species within this ecosystem. To evaluate tourists’ perceptions of sustainable tourism, an eleven-question structured survey was conducted, revealing a high degree of environmental awareness among visitors. Participants expressed a strong recognition of the need to implement responsible practices to support forest conservation and biodiversity protection. Furthermore, environmental impact assessments were carried out using valuation and Leopold matrices, identifying river water quality as the most degraded environmental factor. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis was also performed to characterize the protected area’s current conditions, and a confrontation matrix was applied to define appropriate environmental management strategies. Based on the analysis, an environmental management plan was formulated to mitigate the adverse effects of tourism and safeguard the forest’s natural assets. The results emphasize the importance of strategic planning that harmonizes tourism development with environmental sustainability, fostering a management framework rooted in education, community engagement, and the regulation of tourism activities to ensure long-term ecosystem protection.
