Abstract

The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has transformed teaching and learning methods, offering tools that personalize and optimize the educational process. However, it is questioned how this technological dependence affects critical cognitive skills, such as reasoning. In the Basic Education career, a solid reasoning ability is crucial to developing effective educators, but the frequent use of AI could reduce the development of these skills.

This study investigates the impact of AI on college students' ability to think and solve problems autonomously. Technology, by providing quick responses and automatic solutions, can decrease the need for deep analysis and reflection, leading to over-dependence that negatively affects critical reasoning. The research will use a mixed design, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, to evaluate how AI influences the development of critical reasoning in Basic Education students. The conclusion is that the intensive use of AI is associated with a decrease in critical thinking skills, which highlights the need to adjust educational programs to balance technology with the promotion of critical thinking in the training of future teachers.
