Abstract

The aim of the study was to identify therapeutic communication strategies used between health personnel, surgical patients and their relatives in a public hospital in Babahoyo, Ecuador. Highlighting the importance of effective communication to improve trust, satisfaction and clinical outcomes in a surgical context, where emotional stress is high. A quantitative, descriptive methodological design was applied with 40 participants, patients undergoing scheduled or emergency surgeries and their relatives. Collection techniques included direct observation of key interactions, structured questionnaires and descriptive statistical analysis. The findings highlight that 87% of health personnel clearly explain medical procedures and 100% adequately communicate surgical risks and benefits, essential elements for trust and informed consent. However, 13% report inconsistencies in explanations and a small percentage (3%) face communication deficiencies that can cause confusion or anxiety. 83% of respondents perceive staff willingness to listen and respond appropriately, although factors such as workload limit this willingness in certain cases. Likewise, 75% do not experience difficulties in understanding information, but 25% report occasional problems linked to technical terms or lack of language adaptation. The study allows us to conclude that, although therapeutic communication is effective in general, there are still areas for improvement in terms of clarity and consistency. It is recommended to train staff, optimize the use of time and use visual resources to reinforce information.
