The research is based on a sample of family businesses in the province and analyzes the importance of adaptation capacity, succession planning and the balance between family and business interests to guarantee their continuity and success. This study used a methodology that included descriptive approaches, documentary review, and quantitative analysis to examine succession planning in family businesses. Information was collected from 274 companies in the province of Tungurahua, and inferential and correlational statistical techniques were applied to evaluate the relationship between the presence of a succession plan with each type of management and positioning, supporting the hypothesis that family businesses with a succession plan they have greater strategic positioning. The results reveal that family businesses that implement a succession plan demonstrate a superior strategic positioning compared to those that do not; likewise, the succession plan with third-generation collective management presents greater reputation and differentiation in the market. The hypothesis is supported that succession planning is not only essential to ensure the continuity of the family business, but also has a positive impact on its position in the market.
