Abstract

Mental health in the subject is established according to its quality of life and social environment that absorb it permanently, and in which some components of that context, can become expressively harmful. This research sought to determine the incidence of work stress on the mental health of professional football referees in the province of Los Ríos, taking as a reference the exposure, they tolerate by being responsible for compliance with a set of rules, on a playing field; where subjectivity is established, because of individuals on and off the court, who demand justice, but at the same time, impunity in the game for their team. According to the results, for many of the arbitrators of this association, they find it difficult to deal with the stress of work and family context. This can grow considerably, depending on the football match, the teams facing each other, and the consequences that are being played in the game (points, loss of category or a championship), establishing, since long before the sporting meeting, a climate of tension and anxiety, to live up to what demands the professional's work performance. On many occasions, as a product of all this previously lived context, the performance of the referee in the game is diminished, exposed to the general experience and in some cases, verbal warnings or sanctions, which are limiting their professional performance.
