La Geodiversidad, una componente de desarrollo sostenible

Abstract

In the XXI century, meeting the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the concept of geodiversity and its scope is essential, in the vast majority of the objectives given the presence, interference and the interaction that always offers geodiversity in the natural environment. The aim of this article is to present geodiversity from its definition, components and scope through schemes, reflections and results of various studies carried out today that serve to configure sustainable development approaches. The methodology of this work is based on i) citations of classical and current definitions of geodiversity, ii) conceptual schemes of the scope of the components of geodiversity, iii) analysis of the terms, their relationships and the implications in the natural environment with local examples, iv) conclusions and recommendations. Geodiversity constitutes a primordial component of the natural environment that sustains biodiversity, so that the sum of geodiversity plus biodiversity, constitutes megadiversity, being Ecuador one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world, which gives it a large potential for the strategies for sustainable development objectives, promoting local development.
