The Use of Mobile Applications to Improve Oral Fluency in ESL Students
Downloads
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of mobile applications in improving the oral fluency of ESL students in Babahoyo. The study sample consisted of 80 students, and their performance was evaluated in relation to pronunciation, coherence, grammar, vocabulary, interaction, intonation, use of connectors and naturalness in speaking. The methodology incorporated the use of Microsoft Excel for data tabulation and SPSS 25 for statistical analysis. It was found that the correlations between some variables such as oral fluency, pronunciation, naturalness and the use of connectors had moderate correlations indicating that these skills were positively correlated with each other. However, negative correlations were found for oral interaction and other variables, implying that a higher level of interaction does not improve naturalness or coherence. The KMO test (0.327) together with Bartlett's test of sphericity (chi-square = 4.877; p = 0.899) provided support for the factor analysis. For the first two components extracted, together they accounted for 59.98% of the total variance. The first dealt with naturalness along with pronunciation, while the second was associated with oral fluency and the use of connectors. The results show that apps such as HelloTalk and Cambly support fluency and the use of connectors, while Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone are more effective with pronunciation and natural tone.
