Determinación serológica de adenovirus canino tipo 2 (CAV-2) en un refugio canino de Quito

Abstract

Canine infectious tracheobronchitis (CITB) is a common and high morbidity disease in overcrowded places such as shelters or kennels. The occurrence of outbreaks implies great difficulties both in animal health and the cost of treating these animals, so timely diagnosis is essential to take preventive and control measures, considering that occasionally it occurs without obvious clinical signs. One of the agents that is part of the etiology of this disease is canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), which is included in routine immunization schedules. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of CAV-2 in a group of 47 canines belonging to a shelter in Quito; an immunochromatography test was applied to nasoocular swabs, the result of which was obtained with a colorimetric reader. A prevalence of 8.51% (4/47) was obtained and through the chi-square test (X²) it was determined that age, sex, and the presence of clinical signs during the sampling are not risk factors for the presence of the virus, but it is the existence of respiratory background in the history of the canines (p<0.05). An important aspect of the research is that all infected animals maintained a current vaccination schedule, suggesting that protection against CAV-2 is not complete.
