Trastornos electrocardiográficos de origen extra cardíaco en el centro de rehabilitación social de Riobamba

Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are considered the main cause of mortality in crowded places and
drug use. In many cases, electrocardiographic disorders have an extra-cardiac origin.
Objective: To determine the frequency of appearance of electrocardiographic disorders of
extra-cardiac origin in persons deprived of liberty at Riobamba rehabilitation center.
Material and Methods: A descriptive study of 42 patients. A questionnaire was applied to
collect variables and an electrocardiographic study to determine electrical alterations of the
heart.
Results: 48% of the patients consume illicit drugs, of them, 75% presented
electrocardiographic manifestations, the most frequent being myocardial ischemia (50%).
50% of the patients who consume non-illicit drugs had a normal electrocardiogram, and the
electrocardiographic manifestation with the highest incidence in this group was the
presence of signs related to cardiovascular pressure overload.

Conclusions: The se of illicit drugs considerably increases the risk of electrocardiographic
abnormalities in young patients. Myocardial ischemia is the most common manifestation in
patients who use illicit drugs. The consumption of these, together with other extracardiac
risk factors such as high blood pressure and obesity exacerbate the possibility of permanent
cardiovascular damage.
